Reconstruction showing an interior view of the early thirteenth century presbytery of Rievaulx Abbey. It is thought that the presbytery was constructed to house the shrine of St Aelred, whose remains were placed behind the altar.

Description

Aelred was abbot of Rievaulx Abbey until his death in 1167. This illustration was reproduced on page 8 of the 1994 English Heritage guidebook for Rievaulx Abbey.
