Description

The buildings on this section of Millbank in the late nineteenth century consisted largely of wharves or small factory buildings. The structures were compulsorily or voluntarily purchased around the turn of the twentieth century after discussion in parliament in the 1898 'Victoria Embankment extension and St John's improvement bill'. This bill proposed the extension of the already-existing area of the Victoria Tower Gardens adjacent to the Tower itself, which were created in the 1870s as part of a project for the Metropolitan Board of Works to improve sewerage systems in London. It seems likely this sketch was created in 1898 in response to the proposed demolition of the buildings, which appears to have taken place by circa 1904. On the reverse of the sketch is a handwritten note reading 'Glyn Edwards, Rm. 340, LBH'. This is likely to mean that the sketch was created by a Mr Glyn Edwards of the Office of Works, who held offices in the former Lambeth Bridge House ('LBH') and whom may have been tasked with recording the buildings prior to demolition.
