Description

Underground monitoring posts were constructed across the country, largely between 1957 and 1965. They were operated by the Royal Observer Corps and were intended to monitor radioactive fallout in the event of a nuclear explosion. At the height of the Cold War there were over 1500 in existence, although nearly 700 were closed in 1968. The last of the posts was closed in 1991.

This plan is reproduced on page 181 of the 2003 publication 'Cold War: Building for Nuclear Confrontation' by Wayne D Cocroft , Roger J C Thomas and P S Barnwell.

At the time of cataloguing only the digital scan was held by the Historic England Archive.
