Description

The buildings stand at the junction of lines of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, The Surtees branch and The 'Black Boy' branch leading from 'Black Boy Colliery', hence the name. However they are thought to have never been actual stables but perhaps stores for horse feed and a tack room; the central building may have been a meter house associated with the gasworks formerly on the site. The easternmost building is referred to on the hand-list as a toll house but other sources suggest it was a platelayer's cabin, known as Castle Cabin by the castellated roofline. The building has been much altered since, losing the crenellations and being given a single sloped roofline and having much of the stonework of the walls replaced. All the buildings were vandalised in 1985 and have been roofless since then.
