7/92 Lock No. 49 (Moss Upper Lock) (East of Oldham Road) G.V. II

Lock. Between 1794 and 1804. William Jessop, engineer.

Dressed stone. Lock was designed to accommodate two sets of lower gates (ie for two lengths of a boat); the recesses remain but only the lower gates were ever fitted. The mouth of the lock is grooved for stop planks and winding gear remains on one side. The head of the retainin walls has a rounded arris and the stonework between the lower two gates has finely worked margins. The gates are completely overhauled.
