SD 91 SW ROCHDALE ROCHDALE CANAL BRANCH ARM
7/96 Halfpenny Bridge 22.2.1977 (formerly listed under Oldham Road (West Side))
G.V. II
Foot bridge. 1831. Wrought and cast iron, stone and brick.
A shallow segmental riveted girder supports another which forms the road level. Parapet of stout cast iron railings with crested lattice panels. At west end three fluted column cast iron posts at the head of a flight of stone steps with thick rusticated side walls. The road bed, of York stone paving, continues into a cobbled path at east end. The bridge formerly crossed the Rochdale Canal Branch Arm and is of particular interest as a rare survival of a toll bridge over a canal. Plaque commemorates restoration of 1978.
