SLAPTON SX84NW Higher North Mill 5/74 II

Miller's house and water mill, converted into one house. Early to mid C19, converted and restored in C20. Local slate rubble with red brick window arches. Slate hipped roof over house and gable-ended corrugated iron roof over former mill. Stacks over side walls of house have red brick slafts and slate cowling.

Plan: The house on the left has a double-depth plan with 2 principal rooms at the front with a central entrance between with a staircase at the back and with service rooms behind the front rooms; the partition between the front and back left-hand rooms has be removed. The mill a cross-wing on the right-hand side is now part of the house and the machinery has been taken out.

Exterior: House is 2 storeys, mill 2 storey and attic. The house set back on left has an almost symmetrical 3 window front, the windows and doorway disposed slightly to the left have flat red brick arches and C20 16-pane replacement sashes, the first floor centre window is C20 12-pane sash.

Doorway to left of centre has C19 panelled on the entrance right of front a small C20 round window with a corrugatedi-iron canopy over in the angle with the mill.

The mill is a projecting gable-ended cross-wing on the right, the central ground floor doorway is now a C20 casement window, C19 plank loading door above flanked by 12-pane casements and above in the gable a small pivot window. The right-hand side of the mill has various C20 casements and a C20 glazed door.

Interior much altered. The front right-hand room and room behind are now one large room and the chimneypieces have been removed. Some C19 joinery survives but only the landing balustrade of the staircase is intact.

The watermill is now part of the house and all that survives of its machinery are 2 stones on the first floor which is used for storage.
