The port at Newhaven came into local prominance in the 16th century. In the 19th century the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway acquired harbour rights at Newhaven and built a western breakwater and eastern pier, providing the only harbour between Dover and Spithead. Regular cross-channel passenger services between Newhaven and Dieppe were maintained by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, and later British Railway. International ferries to Dieppe continued operating in the 21st century.
