Foremost 22 was built in 1924 by J Meyers Shipbuilding Co. in Holland, for James Contracting. Many of the vessels of James Contracting, which operated dredgers at Newhaven, were named Foremost followed by a second name or number. Foremost 22 towed mud barges, and assisted the Newhaven-Dieppe steamboats. In 1940, during the evacuation of Dunkirk, she towed the damaged HMS Sharpshooter from Dunkirk to Dover. Foremost 22 was replaced by the tug Meeching in 1960, and was towed to Italy where she served until 1978.
