The martello tower at Seaford was built in 1808, and was added to an existing chain of 73 towers on the south coast as the westernmost martello tower. In the 19th century it was used as a signal tower and a coastguard station, and during the early 20th century as an amusement arcade and cafe. In 1922 a residential apartment with a gallery was added onto the roof of the tower, as shown in this photograph. This was later removed; the tower was restored to its original design in the 1970s, and since the late 20th century has housed a museum.
