In November 1979, Laing Industrial Engineering and Construction Ltd (also referred to as the IE&C team) started work on an extension to Coryton Oil Refinery. The residual upgrading of the refinery was carried out by Pullman-Kellogg, with Laing as sub-contractors. A huge amount of pipework had to be prefabricated and installed as part of the construction. Pipework also had to be connected from the existing refinery to the extension, which was a Fluidised Catalytic Cracker (FCC) plant.
The photograph shows the pipe rack in second avenue carrying pipe runs and expansion loops at two levels, with the existing process plant in the background and part of the new FCC Plant at centre right.
