Description

A contract for a new bypass of the A1 at Wetherby, to relieve congestion at the A58 roundabout, began in 1986. The scheme involved new bridges, dual carriageway, and slip roads. The new bypass left the original road before the A58 roundabout, crossed the River Wharfe, and joined the former bypass between the Walton Road and York Road interchanges. In 1990, Laing Civil Engineering were awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers, Yorkshire and Humberside Region Award for the Wetherby Bypass contract. The Second Wetherby Bypass bridge was replaced when the A1 was enlarged into the A1(M). The bridge shown in the photograph was located at SE4065647564.
