Description

Laing Homes Special Projects worked in partnership with Hackney Council and a consortium of housing associations to redevelop the estate which had originally been built in the 1970s. The aim of the project was to provide over 1000 new and refurbished homes over a 6 year period, following traditional street patterns and providing gardens for residents. This photograph is part of a batch taken to show a visit to the Holly Street Estate by the then Prime Minster Tony Blair and his deputy John Prescott. In October 1998, Laing's newsletter 'Team Spirit' records that the site had been chosen by the government as a launch pad for an £800 million, 20-year campaign to transform Britain's most run-down areas.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
