Laing worked in conjunction with the Environment Agency to alter the course of a small section of the River Mole to allow for the development of stretch of land at Gatwick Airport. 2,000 trees were planted and ready made holts for otters were dug into the banks to encourage wildlife into the area. The river had been diverted previously to construct the North Terminal and was culverted in 1956 to enable the runway to be built over it. Laing had a framework agreement in place with the British Airports Authority since 1994 under which Laing was the prime engineering contractor on any works carried out at BAA sites.
