During the First World War Martlesham Heath Airfield was home to the Royal Flying Corps. At the outbreak of the Second World War it was used by the RAF before being allocated to the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in 1943. In October of that year it became home to USAAF 356th Fighter Group who flew their last combat mission in May 1945. After the war it was returned to the Royal Air Force (RAF).
