Description

Marble statue. Erected 1761. The monument stands in St Micheal's Chapel in Westminater Abbey, apart from the grave of Lady Elizabeth Nightingale (1704-1731) and her husband, Joseph Gascoigne Nightingale (1695-1752). The statue shows a figure of Death appearing from a door beneath the main pedestal, and aiming a spear towards the collapsed figure of Lady Nightingale. Her husband supports her with his left arm, and tried to ward off the spear with his right. The figure of Death appears to have no lower jaw, and the inscription bears the wrongs dated of death for Lady Nightingale.
