Description

By the mid-19th century all of the mansions along the Strand, bar Northumberland House, had been demolished. After damage from a fire, the house was sold to the Metropolitan Board of Works who wanted to demolish it in order to build a road through the site (now Northumberland Avenue). Following the demolition in 1874, a new hotel was built close to the site. Now government offices, this building is also known as Northumberland House.
