Description

The building is so named because it was formerly the banqueting hall of Whitehall Palace which burned down at the end of the 17th century. After 1698 it ceased to be used as such and was instead converted in the Chapel Royal by Sir Christopher Wren. In 1809 the building became the Chapel of the Horse Guards, before being returned to use as a Chapel Royal until 1890, and then later changed again into a museum. It is currently known by the name the Banqueting House.
