Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Probationer and staff nurse at work. Picture shows the new probationer, Miss D.Cockerell, putting on her first uniform and being shown by Home Sister how to adjuster her cap.”

Women, and later men, aged over 16 years could begin training to be a nurse as a probationer. Probationers would be observed and examined to determine their suitability as nurses and, after passing examinations, could then pursue further qualifications.
