Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Psychiatry for nurses. Pix shows a doctor meeting the nurses in his wards to discuss methods of handling patients.”

Mill Hill School was evacuated in 1939 and staff from the Maudsley Hospital, a psychiatric hospital, moved into its buildings. As a psychiatric hospital, Mill Hill Emergency Hospital treated soldiers and civilians experiencing mental illnesses, ‘shell shock’, and ‘effort syndrome’ ('Da Costa's syndrome'). Innovations at Mill Hill included the use of electroconvulsive therapy, the Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale for testing verbal intelligence, therapeutic communities and group ‘psychodrama’ plays, and preliminary research into dementia. Attention was also given to integrating patients into society after their military service. See also MED01/01/3469-3472 and MED01/01/3474-3482.
