Description

The Plaza Cinema opened in 1933, was renamed the Gaumont in 1955, and was then converted into the Majestic Ballroom. From August 1965 was the Top Rank Bingo Club. It was later converted into a 3-screen cinema and bingo hall, named the Apollo Cinema, which opened in May 1990. The cinema had two 100-seat screens and a smaller 93-seat screen in the former circle foyer; a single projection room, perhaps the one shown in this photograph, served the two larger screens. After the cinema closed in 2005, the building was used as a concert venue and club until 2010. It has since been demolished.
