Description

The Gaumont Palace Theatre opened in 1931 and was renamed the Gaumont in 1937. It was the first cinema to be built by Gaumont British Theatres; previous cinemas operated by Gaumont had been taken over from other firms. The cinema closed for modernisation and repairs in 1963 and 1973, and following this latter closure it boasted the largest screen in Europe. The Gaumont closed in 1983 and the building was demolished in 1986.
