Description

The Clifton Cinema was opened in 1938. The large fortress-like towers on either side of the front facade contain the emergency stairs. The Moderne design also features brickwork in the Arts and Crafts style. The Clifton Cinema was part of the Clifton chain, operated by Sydney Clift. The cinema closed in 1979 and was used as a bingo hall until 2008. It was subsequently converted into a restaurant. In 2012, the building was damaged by fire. The building was Listed at Grade II in 2000. The date of this photograph is not known, but it is likely to be May 1979 based on the films shown on the sign above the entrance.
