Description

A cinema has existed on this site since 1914. Originally named the Empire Picture House, a new, expanded auditorium was built in 1935 and was designed by prominent local cinema designer Archibald Hurley Robinson. The newly constructed cinema was named the New Empire cinema.

The building was of Art Deco design and, in 2020 remains in use as an Odeon cinema. In between its time as the New Empire and Odeon cinema (2011), the building has been known by a number of different names, including the Essoldo (1954), Curzon (1966), Classic (1973- returned to Curzon in 1974) and Reel. The building’s name was used in relation to another cinema within Loughborough and as such changed to ensure no name was duplicated locally.

The release dates of the films advertised on the front of the cinema building vary. It is possible that the theatre was not showing latest release films, but a variety of modern and recent films.
