Description

The cinema originally opened as part of the Odeon chain in 1936. It was designed by architect Arthur J. Price, who worked for the firm Harry Weedon Partnership. The entire façade of the building was covered in glazed ceramic tiles manufactured locally.

The theatre was sold to the Classic Cinema chain in 1967 and renamed the Classic Cinema. The building occasionally hosted bingo, but stopped showing films in 1974, after which it became a full-time Mecca Bingo Hall. In 2020 the building remains in use as a Bingo Hall and in 2008 it received Grade II listed status.
