Description

This cinema building opened as the Ritz Cinema in 1936, operated by Union Cinemas. In 1937 it was taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC), continuing as the Ritz Cinema until 1963 when it was re-named ABC. It was taken over by the Cannon Group in 1986, then MGM followed by ABC again, before becoming an Odeon Cinema in the year 2000. The bas-relief figure shown in the photograph was designed by the sculptor Newbury Trent (1885-1953).
