Description

The Gaumont Cinema opened in May 1938. Nova Pilbeam attended the opening, which was probably a screening of 'Young and Innocent', shown in this photograph on the billboard above the entrance. Pilbeam's handprints and footprints were set in cement on the pavement beside the cinema's entrance. The cinema closed in 1964. The building became a bingo hall and later a snooker club. In the 1990s it was used as a roller skating rink and was then converted for retail. This photograph is a copy; the original photographer is not known.
