Description

The Empire Hippodrome opened in 1904. The auditorium was substantially reconstructed and refurbished by Drury and Gomersall in 1933. The gallery and boxes were replaced by a circle. It was reopened as the New Empire in 1933, and became the ABC Cinema in 1963. The building became a live theatre called Tameside Theatre or Tameside Hippodrome in 1976. This photograph was previously erroneously identified as showing the Metro Cinema, Ashton-under-Lyne.
