PRINT MOUNTED ON CARD MEASURING 10 INS X 8 INS HOUSED IN 10 INS X 8.25 INS PROTECTIVE SLEEVE Originally catalogued with the title INTERIOR DETAIL VIEW SHOWING CARVED WOODEN PANELLING DEPICTING "THE JEWS OF COMPTON" due to a mis-reading of the handwritten note on the back of the print.
The carving shows a battle scene with mounted knights and foot soldiers with a central shield bearing the arms of the Compton family. It is thought to represent the “Battle of the Spurs” or 2nd Battle of Guinegate of 16th August 1513, following which William Compton was knighted at Tournai Cathedral. William had been made a ward of Henry VII when his father Edmund Compton died in 1493, William was appointed page to the young Prince Henry. On Henry VIII's accession in 1509 William was made Groom of the Stool.
