Description

The original caption reads: "A view of the upstream section of the 1951 Exhibition, South Bank London, under construction."

The South Bank Exhibition was built on a 27 acre site on the South Bank of the River Thames. The area had been damaged by bombing during the Second World War, and remaining buildings were demolished. The site was divided into the Upstream and Downstream Pavilions, built between 1949 and 1951. The upstream section, which would occupy the site shown in this photograph, upstream of Hungerford Bridge, would "[tell] the story of the Land of Britain and of the things the the British have derived from their land".
