Description

Northumberland House was built on the Strand at the beginning of the 17th century. The lion seen in the photograph was known as the Percy lion, and was added to the Strand facade in 1749. In 1874 the building was demolished to make way for Northumberland Avenue, which connected the newly constructed Thames Embankment to Trafalgar Square.
