Description

The Cove originally consisted of three similarly-sized and shaped sarsens, arranged along three sides of a square plan. Many buildings within the henge were removed by owner and archaeologist Alexander Keiller to 'restore' the monument, with this ethos continuing during and after World War II when Keiller handed guardianship of the Avebury site over to the National Trust. It was after this point that the stone buildings pictured here immediately behind the Cove were demolished along with cottages opposite the Red Lion Inn. This photograph was taken by Charles Walker Clarke of Devizes.
