Description

This photograph can be dated to before 1870, as it was in that year that Sir George Gilbert Scott's finely-executed filigree iron choir screen was installed as part of his restorations to the cathedral between 1863 and 1867. In 1959, the screen was removed to allow the congregation an unrestricted view of the high altar from the nave; Gilbert Scott's reredos, also pictured here, was also removed at this time. The foundations of the Cathedral Church of St Mary at Salisbury were laid on the 25th of February 1220, and the Cathedral was completed in 1266. The Cloisters and the Chapter House were added between 1270 and 1279.
