Description

St Lawrence's Church is an 8th to 10th century Saxon church, on the site of an 8th century monastery founded by St Aldhelm circa 705-10. The monastery was dissolved in 1001 when it was granted to Sherborne Abbey. The church was used as a charnel house during the medieval period before being converted into a school and dwelling in the 18th or 19th century, and was restored in 1870. This photograph is noted on the reverse of the print as being one of 'Dortesio and Todd's Noted Series of Wiltshire Views'.
