Description

The church was built by T H Wyatt and D Brandon in 1841-44 in the north Italian Romanesque style. The church was built for the Rt Hon Sir Sidney Herbert and for his mother the Countess of Pembroke. The Countess was of Russian descent, which explains the style of the church and the orientation; in Russia such a style of church architecture was fashionable, and churches were traditionally oriented on a north-south axis.
