Description

Police convalescent centres were first established in the late 19th century when Miss Catherine Gurney (1848-1930), a Christian activist, realised the need for dedicated convalescent homes for police officers. The Northern Police Convalescent Home first occupied part of St George's House, the police orphanage established by Gurney off Otley Road. In 1901-03 a dedicated home was constructed to designs by Chorley, Connon and Chorley, on land adjacent to the orphanage in Harlow Moor Road. As well as residential accommodation, the home had a bowling green and cricket ground.
