Description

The Wilberforce Memorial, a charity, was founded in 1833 following the death of the MP and reformer William Wilberforce. The charity opened the ‘Yorkshire School for the Blind’, also known as the ‘Wilberforce School for the Blind’, soon afterwards, probably in 1835. It was located in King’s Manor (originally the abbot's house of St Mary's Abbey) until the mid 20th century; the ‘Wilberforce Home for the Multiple Handicapped Blind’ opened at Dringthorpe in 1968.
