The castle dates from the twelfth century, and Leicester's Building was completed in the sixteenth century. It was constructed by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, as a three-storey high-status accommodation block for visitors to the castle.
This photograph was transferred from the library of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1936.
