Description

This ancient vase was excavated around 1771 by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish painter, antiquarian and art dealer based in Rome. It was sold to British envoy Sir William Hamilton, who then passed it to his nephew George Greville, second Earl of Warwick. Here we see the vase on display in a specially-constructed greenhouse in the grounds of the Castle. The vase was sold in 1978 and is now part of the Burrell Collection in Glasgow.
