The present fortified manor house was begun in the Tudor period circa 1500, with additional wings added in subsequent centuries by members of the Compton family, who have occupied the site since the early thirteenth century. The house is still used by the family and is the seat of the Marquis of Northampton.
The reverse of this print shows handwritten notes and appears to indicate a Monmouth photographer's name in the bottom-right corner, perhaps W A Call, who is recorded as being based in Chepstow in 1910.
