Description

Nash's House, so named after Thomas Nash, first husband of Shakespeare's granddaughter, was built circa 1600 as a town house and is now in use as the New Place Museum. This photograph shows the house in the late nineteenth century with a Georgian facade replacing its original timber and plaster Tudor frontage. This was removed in 1912 and replaced with a modern mock-Tudor timber-framed and plaster facade, in keeping with the original Tudor building. Adjacent to Nash's House is the site of New Place, the home Shakespeare retired to with his wife Anne Hathaway. New Place was built during the reign of Henry VII and was demolished in 1759, placed by a memorial Shakespeare Garden laid out in the style of a Tudor Knot Garden.
