Description

The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre was begun in 1874 to the designs of architects Dodgshun and Unsworth, and was opened on the 23rd of April 1879. The building was gutted by fire in 1926 leaving only the Dutch-influenced modernist exterior shell, which was incorporated into the new theatre which opened in 1932. The building was restored as the Swan Theatre in 1983 - 1986.
