Description

The hospital was originally built by the Guild of St George in and the Holy Trinity in the fifteenth century. It was taken by Robert Dudley, Lord Leicester, in 1571 and converted into a pensioners' hospital. Dudley's family crest, the bear and ragged staff, are above the archway, along with his family motto 'droit et loyal'. Notes on the reverse of the photograph mount record that the image was likely to have been taken by either Bernard Moore of Birmingham or P J Deakin.
