Description

The Royal Pump Room was designed and built by C S Smith in the early nineteenth century, with extensive alterations and additions carried out in 1861 and 1885-6 and the addition of the swimming baths in 1889. We can confidently date this image to after 1889 as this is when the baths were added (the sign on the building's facade reads 'Royal Pump Room and Baths'). The tower at the north-east corner of the building pictured in this photograph was added in 1885-6, but was removed in 1950.
