A piece of text underneath the print states that the font originally stood in a Norman church of St Lawrence at Over Whitacre, and was later used as a mounting block outside an inn at Shustock. It was again removed to the garden of a Mr Sadler of Sutton Coldfield where it remained until his son, Mr Richard Sadler, presented it to the Parish Church in 1856.
This photograph was taken on the 22nd of April 1947 by William A Clark, FRPS, of Moseley, Birmingham, as part of a submission to the Architectural Detail Postal Club. Handwritten notes by Mr Clark on the inside of the mount card record his thoughts about the insensitive restoration of the faces carved on the font; 'I cannot understand [...] why the noses have been so outrageously restored with what appears to be cement [worn] nearly to jet blackness'. A responding note from another member of the Postal Club enquires whether the cement can be removed.
