Description

The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre was begun in 1874 to the designs of architects Dodgshun and Unsworth, and was opened on the 23rd of April 1879. This original building pictured in this print was gutted by fire in 1926 leaving only the Dutch-influenced modernist exterior shell, which was incorporated into the new theatre which opened in 1932. The building was restored as the Swan Theatre in 1983 - 1986, and is currently known as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The photograph was taken by George Washington Wilson and Company.
