Description

Mervyn's Bower is referred to in Chapter 29 of Sir Walter Scott's novel 'Kenilworth', which was published in January 1821. It is unclear, however, whether the architectural feature was known by that name before the book was published, or whether it became known as such due to the popularity of the novel.

This collotype print was created by James Valentine and Sons Limited and is likely to have been a copy made from an original photograph by the company, inwhich it appears the background of the image was been removed during the development process. The creation date range of this print has been confirmed from other surviving reproductions of this image.
