Description

Essex House was at the time of the photograph the home of the designer and craftsman CR Ashbee, and one of the bases for the Guild and School of Handicraft which he founded in 1888. Ashbee also founded the Survey of London in 1894, aiming to record and preserve the historic monuments of Greater London. The photograph was taken by the London Survey Committee, forerunner of the Survey of London.

Archival History

This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-1 Red Box Project.
