A detail view of the elaborate tomb of Sir John Roberts in the north aisle of the Church of St Mary at Bromley-by-Bow. The church appears to have also been known as the Church of St Mary with St Leonard, or the Church of Bromley St Leonard.

Description

The church was destroyed by enemy bombing during World War Two, with the remaining ruins demolished during the construction of the Blackwall Tunnel. The photograph was taken for the London Survey Committee, forerunner of the Survey of London.

Archival History

This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-1 Red Box Project.
