Description

The portico originally led into a market which was completed in 1808. The side wings of the structure housed a watch house (police station) and the office of a Beadle (an official employed to carry out religious, civil, educational or ceremonial duties). By 1906 the open portico was enclosed and adapted to house Stamford Free Library.
